Progress?

The hand that holds the gun is not as callused
as the hand that held it last
The finger that pushes the button that launches
thousands of missiles is manicured
The mind that designs the remote-controlled
bombs that will destroy continents,
is also deciding what to cook for dinner
and if it's their turn to pick up the kids
after soccer practice

Humanity cannot breed out the acidic impulses
that stem from thousands of years of blood lust
But we can design weapons that can kill
almost instantaneously
with less structural damage
with less innocent casualties
almost irreverently
with less psychological effects
with less chance of repercussions
almost indifferently

The hand that holds the gun
The finger that pushes the button
The mind that designs the bombs
are all still pumping blood into
the military industrial complex
But it's not all that complicated

Human beings kills each other

Not for individual survival,
but for the foul implications
of a once clean word called

progress
